How To Adjust Your Chainsaw's Chains
- Familiarize yourself with the chainsaw and its parts. Make sure you know where the chain tensioning screw is located and how to access it.
- Make sure the chainsaw is turned off and the bar and chain are at a complete stop before adjusting the tension.
- Lay the chainsaw on a flat surface, with the bar and chain facing upwards.
- Locate the chain tensioning screw, which is usually located near the back of the chainsaw's bar.
- Using a screwdriver or the tensioning tool that came with your chainsaw, loosen the tensioning screw until the chain is slack.
- Hold the chainsaw firmly with one hand and gently lift the bar with the other hand to check that the chain is not too loose. It should have a slight amount of slack, but not so much that it comes off the bar.
- If the chain is too loose, tighten the tensioning screw slightly until the chain is properly tensioned.
- If the chain is too tight, loosen the tensioning screw until the chain is properly tensioned.
- Once the chain is properly tensioned, start the chainsaw and let it run for a few seconds to ensure that the chain is running smoothly.
- If the chain is not running smoothly, stop the chainsaw and readjust the tension as necessary.
- Repeat steps 6-10 until the chain is running smoothly and is properly tensioned.
- Once the chain is properly tensioned and running smoothly, stop the chainsaw and tighten the tensioning screw.
- Check the tension of the chain periodically, especially after using the chainsaw for an extended period of time or cutting through tough materials.
- If the chain becomes too loose or too tight, readjust the tension as necessary.
- Always follow proper safety precautions when using a chainsaw, including wearing protective clothing and using the safety features on the chainsaw.
