How To Adjust Your Chainsaw's Chains

  1. Familiarize yourself with the chainsaw and its parts. Make sure you know where the chain tensioning screw is located and how to access it.
  2. Make sure the chainsaw is turned off and the bar and chain are at a complete stop before adjusting the tension.
  3. Lay the chainsaw on a flat surface, with the bar and chain facing upwards.
  4. Locate the chain tensioning screw, which is usually located near the back of the chainsaw's bar.
  5. Using a screwdriver or the tensioning tool that came with your chainsaw, loosen the tensioning screw until the chain is slack.
  6. Hold the chainsaw firmly with one hand and gently lift the bar with the other hand to check that the chain is not too loose. It should have a slight amount of slack, but not so much that it comes off the bar.
  7. If the chain is too loose, tighten the tensioning screw slightly until the chain is properly tensioned.
  8. If the chain is too tight, loosen the tensioning screw until the chain is properly tensioned.
  9. Once the chain is properly tensioned, start the chainsaw and let it run for a few seconds to ensure that the chain is running smoothly.
  10. If the chain is not running smoothly, stop the chainsaw and readjust the tension as necessary.
  11. Repeat steps 6-10 until the chain is running smoothly and is properly tensioned.
  12. Once the chain is properly tensioned and running smoothly, stop the chainsaw and tighten the tensioning screw.
  13. Check the tension of the chain periodically, especially after using the chainsaw for an extended period of time or cutting through tough materials.
  14. If the chain becomes too loose or too tight, readjust the tension as necessary.
  15. Always follow proper safety precautions when using a chainsaw, including wearing protective clothing and using the safety features on the chainsaw.
