Chainsaw Maintenance

So you’ve put a solid amount of hours in your chainsaw and it’s in need of some TLC, or you’re a great owner and prevent issues before they start. Either way, maintenance is always a great idea. It prevents premature and catastrophic failure that could lead to injury, so it is highly recommended that you get it done or, since you’re reading this, you want to see what it takes.

To keep your chainsaw in proper working order, you'll want to have a few tools at your disposal.

  • Filing tools — round filesflat files, and depth gauges help you sharpen your saw chain.
  • Stump Vise (Recommended) — A vise will hold your chainsaw’s guide bar in place while you sharpen the saw chain cutters.
  • Scrench — a half-wrench, half-screwdriver tool that helps you loosen the nuts on the sprocket cover, remove the spark plug and adjust the saw chain.
  • Bar and Chain Oil — to lubricate the cutting portion of your saw.

  • What Do I Need To Maintain?

Let's start at the beginning! Always read and follow the manufacturer's instructions for your specific chainsaw model. This will give you information about the proper lubrication and sharpening techniques for your specific chainsaw.

    1. Keep the chain sharp - A dull chain can cause the chainsaw to work harder, increasing the risk of kickback and causing damage to the saw. To sharpen the chain, you can use a round file, flat file, or an electric sharpener.
    2. Lubricate the chain and bar - The chain and bar should be lubricated with bar and chain oil before each use. This will help keep the chain from rusting and will also help prevent the chain from becoming too hot.
    3. Check the air filter - A dirty air filter can cause the chainsaw to work harder, reducing its efficiency and lifespan. The air filter should be cleaned or replaced as needed.
    4. Check the fuel filter - The fuel filter should be cleaned or replaced as needed to ensure that the chainsaw is getting the proper amount of fuel.
    5. Check the spark plug - The spark plug should be cleaned or replaced as needed to ensure that the chainsaw is getting the proper amount of spark.
    6. Check the chain brake - The chain brake should be checked to ensure that it is functioning properly.
    7. Check the handguard - The hand guard should be checked to ensure that it is securely in place and functioning properly.
    8. Keep the chainsaw clean - After each use, the chainsaw should be cleaned of sawdust and debris. This will help keep the chainsaw running smoothly and extend its lifespan.
    9. Store the chainsaw properly - When not in use, the chainsaw should be stored in a dry, cool place. This will help prevent rust and other damage.
